Former Bafana Bafana striker Mark Williams has questioned the criteria used by the South African Football Association (SAFA) to appoint head coaches.

A 2-0 defeat away in Sudan on Sunday shattered Bafana Bafana’s hopes of playing in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

In an interview with Thabiso Mosia on SAFM Sport On, Williams said, “For me the whole attitude of the coach [Molefi Ntseki] was wrong, from the game against Ghana, you could see he was very defensive. Even against Sudan, they were happy to go for the point. It can’t be.

“We also can’t use the absence of overseas players as an excuse. I actually have goosebumps because I can hear that the nation is really hurt. It’s not nice. As former players, we were talking about it [yesterday].

“When Ntseki was appointed, I asked where had he coached before. Has he experienced playing in these countries he’s facing? You need to also involve people that have played. They’re there, they can go and scout for players and adress some of the problems.

“We need to sit down with SAFA and the Sports Minister [Nathi Mthethwa] and deal with these matters. There are certain things that only a player can explain to a player. In rugby we see former players handing out jerseys to the players. I’ve seen it.

“But in football, it doesn’t happen. I’ve spoken to Danny [Jordaan] to say let’s do this. It will let the players know at least what’s at stake and what it means to wear this jersey. Its small things.”

  1. Mark is correct. How do you appointment a NATIONAL TEAM COACH who has never played for a single professional team? Let alone coaching it. Our football administrators are failing us. They must just resign and let fresh minds take over.

  2. Mark Williams u just naled it, that SAFA don’t know nothing about soccer that wht Bafabafa won’t perform at highest level, what’s they suppose to do ,they must do a nation a favour to resign let former players take over we sick & tired of them , they must go politics en leave sport with sport people
